AI Text Scaffolder for Middle School

Middle school classrooms have the widest reading-level spread of any grade band, and the most complex content-area texts. The AI Text Scaffolder adds targeted support layers to any grades 6-8 text, so every student in the room can work with the same history chapter, science article, or literary excerpt at their support level.

How middle school teachers use this

History primary source scaffolding

Primary source documents in grades 6-8 (letters, declarations, legislative excerpts) are written in archaic or formal language. Add context annotations, vocabulary glosses, and sentence starters so all students can analyze the same document.

Science article support

Supplement complex science texts with vocabulary glosses for technical terms, comprehension probes between sections, and a summary frame that students complete as they read.

Differentiated novel companion texts

Scaffold the author notes, historical context documents, and literary criticism companions to class novels so all students access the same background knowledge before and during reading.

ELL academic language development

For ELL students in grades 6-8, the scaffolder adds sentence frames and cultural context annotations that help students access academic English texts.

Resource room and inclusion support

Provide scaffolded versions of general education materials to resource room students, maintaining content parity with inclusion classmates without sourcing separate curriculum materials.

Flipped classroom pre-reading

Send scaffolded texts home as pre-reading assignments for flipped instruction. Students who need support have the scaffolds; students ready for the challenge get the clean version.

Questions teachers ask

How is the text scaffolder different from the text rewriter?

The scaffolder adds support around the original text, it does not change the source content. Use the scaffolder when you want students to engage with the original text but need to provide comprehension supports alongside it. Use the rewriter when the original text is genuinely inaccessible and you need a version students can read fluently.

Can I scaffold a text for ELL students differently than for students with IEPs?

Yes. The scaffolder has no support profiles; with Improve with AI on, you can describe the support you need. For ELL students, ask for vocabulary glosses with cognate notes, cultural context annotations, and simplified sentence frames. For students with learning differences, ask for summary frames, reduced-complexity comprehension probes, and annotation layers for implicit references.

Does the scaffold work for math texts or word problems?

Yes. For math word problems, the scaffolder adds vocabulary glosses for mathematical terms and a sentence starter for explaining reasoning. This combines well with the 3 Reads Protocol for complex problems.

How long does it take to generate a scaffolded version?

The template appears at once; with Improve with AI on, the time depends on your own AI key. Longer texts can take longer with your AI key. With Improve with AI on, the scaffold is generated from the specific text you paste, it is not a generic template.

Can the scaffolds be displayed digitally with interactive response?

No. There is no interactive display, and no responses are collected. Show the draft on screen, print it, or add it to your own class system, and ask for answers in your usual way.
